ABOUT ME, MY TOWN AND MY FAMILY IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC
ABOUT ME: -> Jiri Dlouhy, that's me (EN: George Long, GE: Georg
Lange, ESP: Jorge Largo), born on October 16th, 1977 in Kladno, turned 30 in 2008 already :-( the time is running
faster and faster..., living in the town of Stochov now, where bought a flat, although I originally come and like it more in Kladno in the central part of the Czech Republic (population: 75,000; it is about 30 km from the capital, Prague).
After a couple of years of studying hard :-) I ended up with a Bachelor titul in front of my name and will finish
a master degree in 2010...

HOBBIES AND INTERESTS: As for my hobbies,
I like all what is new, new furniture, new environment, new people, and eg. new hi-tech electonics (new laptops, new mobiles,
GPS, projectors, watches, LED & full HD LCD TV's, cameras etc.), but of course, with the level of salary I am on, I can
not afford to keep up-to-date :-). I also like cars, bikes, PC games and all kind of sports, I think I will never grow up.
As for sports I have always searched for some adrenalin activities such us sky-diving, paragliding, canyoning, mountainboarding,
snowboarding, scuba diving etc. Apart from that I like exercising in the gym, squash, swimming and cycling, tennis, table-tennis,
beach-volleyball, in-line skating, windsurfing.. (almost all sports). I usually go hiking in the summer and skiing in the
winter with my friends. My other favourite leisure activities are car washing, driving, listening to music, gardening, mushrooming,
watching movies, snorkeling and photography. I also love travelling, visiting new countries and meeting new people... It is
very exciting getting to know different countries and cultures and making new friends, some of whom remain friends forever.
The furthest I've been so far is Maldives, Iceland, Canary Islands, Morocco and Russia. I loved them all. Learning foreign
languages is fascinating for me too. I think I have a good sense of humor and I like people who like to laugh, too. I always
laugh too laudly, so that everyone knows where I am...
CZECH REPUBLIC: The Czech Republic, as a part
of Middle Europe, is squeezed between Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Poland. The country is bordered by the mountains. Its
area is almost 790 sq km (300 sq miles), the same size as Ireland. The highest point is Snezka at 1602 m (5222 ft). The capital
Prague is in the middle of the western part of the country, 300 m above sea level. There
are about 10 million people in the Czech Republic (1.3 million in Prague, 2008). Most of them are Czechs and they speak the
Czech language. They tend to be polite, mild-mannered with a good sense of humor, not inclined to arguing or fighting. They
are intelligent, creative, well educated and can be quite conservative. If you are invited into a home, you will find them
friendly and very hospitable (do bring flowers for your host and remember to remove your shoes when you enter the house).
Czechs, especially young people, love sport and they are very outdoor
oriented. It is easy to find somebody to take a walk with out of the city to the beautiful Czech countryside or to ride a
bike to the mountains especially in summer. Czechs tend to spend most weekends outside the main cities. The Czech country has a long history and there are almost 1000 castles and ruins throughout
MY FAMILY: While staying in the Czech Republic I lived first quarter of my life with my parents
in a very nice part of our town, which is surrounded by forest. This slightly improves the appearance of the housing, which
is very often made of prefabricated blocks and is very ugly. My mother Jirina is already
drawing a pension. She is a very energetic and active person. Because she doesn't need to go to work any more she loves gardening
and spending in our garden most of summer days. My father is also Jiri (same as me). He was a foundry man, but because of a big crisis in metallurgy in my town, he was made redundant
on 11-03-1997. However he was later on re-employed and was doing the same job in the same place as he
used to. He is retired by now too. His former company called POLDI Steel, where he worked for over 30 years,
went bankrupt and more than 20,000 people were made redundant. Most of the 75,000 inhabitants of Kladno were terribly affected
and faced an uncertain future in the wake of the collapse of this steel giant, while some people were commuting 30 kilometres
to work in Prague. Now, the employment and economic situation in my town is getting better again. I have one older sister (9 yrs older),Vladimira. She is married and
has 2 sons (Jiri and Vladimir) and works as a teacher and since 2006 she is the justified holder of Master degree in
special pedagogy from the Charles university in Prague, which also means that she became officially cleverer than me
:-((( !!!
KLADNO, MY HOMETOWN: Kladno is
an industrial centre of the coal-mining region, it had large iron and steel plants and manufactured machinery and steel alloys.
Founded in 973, Kladno grew rapidly with the opening of its first coal mine in 1846. The living conditions in Kladno are not
as good as one could wish, because the majority of the population lives in blocks of flats. A walk around the local housing
estates gives a good insight into the history of the Czechoslovak standardisation of apartment houses in the period after
1945 (during the long stage of Communism). But nowadays it is not as bad as I just described. We have a brand new aquapark,
many sport stadiums, forests, in-line skating places and other leisure possibilities, so nothing to complain about really
:-)
